Chapter Ten

When the first rays of the morning sun touched her face, she opened her eyes. Jan glanced around to see the fire had gone out. The creatures she had danced with last night were still snoring. A chill ran through her from the temperature of the morning. Dew clung to her hair. She rubbed her eyes to wake up. When she sat up, her head began to pound. I never should’ve drunk that whole mug of mead. I’m going to regret it all day. The world rotated when she sat up. She wasn’t sure which way was up or down. It took all of her strength just to focus. The aroma of the flowers and the morning air were all amplified, along with the scents of the creatures around her. Last night she hadn’t noticed that the fawn was sleeping next to her. His pungent odor turned her stomach. She got up quickly and rushed to a corner of the glade and emptied the contents of her stomach. After the nausea passed, she stood up slowly. Twittering laughter sounded behind her. Jan turned and saw Fiona.

“You don’t know how to handle your drink.”

“Is it that obvious?”

Fiona nodded. “Here.” She handed her a cup of water and then crushed some herbs into it from a pouch she had at her waist.

Jan eyed her before taking it.

“It will help. I take it that you’re descended from a human lineage. I wasn’t too sure last night when we were rejoicing. Don’t mind the others. They can get a little rowdy, but they mean well. They’re sweethearts.”

Jan nodded and sipped the liquid. She tasted mint and orange. It settled her stomach and her head didn’t spin anymore. She took another drink and then handed it back to Fiona. “Thank you for that. You’re right. I-ah, was highly prized by my master because of my lineage. He thought it was something to have a mostly human slave.”

The other woman nodded. “Some of the darker fey are like that. They choose to keep humans for pets and slaves. Breaking into the human world and pulling them over. They watch them breed. It’s horrible. I’ve been to some of the pens and seen it for myself. I was a servant in one of their organizations. It was funded by one of the Houses. They’re against the humans. Can I ask you something?” the woman said.

Jan glanced around the clearing. The fawn bleated and then whistled in his sleep. “Sure.”

“What else are you running from?”

“Nothing, just my master. Escaping from him was sheer luck. He left me unchained and I…”

“Please. I know you’re lying. The others were too drunk to notice. Maybe I can help you.”

The sylph seemed to be sincere. Jan wanted to believe her, but she also wondered if the men would find her. By now, they were sure to notice her absence. She hadn’t heard them calling for her, and she hadn’t seen Muffin. She needed to straighten out what she wanted to do with Corin.
